What is a GTM engineer? And do you need one?

What a GTM engineer does, what the role pays in 2026, how it differs from RevOps, the tools involved, and whether a small team needs to hire one.

A GTM engineer is a commercial operator who builds automated systems for finding, researching and contacting buyers, instead of doing that work by hand. They connect data, AI and workflow tools so that one workflow handles every account. Larger teams with complex stacks often benefit from one. Founders and small teams can usually get the output without hiring.

Key points

  • GTM engineering is building automated revenue systems with data, AI and workflow tools. The role took off after Clay coined it in 2023.
  • As of October 2026, a RevGuild report on US job postings puts the median GTM engineer base salary at $150,000.
  • RevOps keeps the revenue process and data in order. A GTM engineer builds new automated plays on top of that.
  • Clay is the tool most associated with the role, alongside a CRM such as HubSpot or Salesforce.
  • Small teams usually need the output of a GTM workflow more than they need the hire.

What does a GTM engineer do?

A GTM engineer builds and runs the systems that find, research and contact the right buyers automatically. GTM stands for go-to-market: the work of getting a product in front of the people who will buy it.

Clay, which coined the role, puts it this way in its Complete Guide to GTM Engineering: "GTM engineering is the practice of building automated revenue systems with AI, data, and workflow automation." The key line is "The unit of work is a system, not a task." A traditional ops hire researches one account and drafts one follow-up. A GTM engineer builds the workflow that does it for every account.

The RevGuild salary report describes the person as "a commercial operator who builds and automates go-to-market systems," and "closer to a technical RevOps hire than a software developer." So this is not usually a software engineering job. It is a sales and marketing job for someone who is comfortable with data, logic and automation.

Clay's guide describes the work as three layers, each relying on the one before:

  1. Data foundation. Clean, deduplicated CRM records, enriched with the fields you need.
  2. Data modelling. Scoring accounts and people, and researching them.
  3. Data activation. Turning that into action: routing inbound leads, personalised emails, alerts to reps.

Typical projects include routing inbound leads to the right rep, enriching CRM records, building lead scoring, and running signal-based email plays, such as contacting companies that just raised money or started hiring. If you want to see what those plays look like, our guide to signal-based selling covers the common signals.

What does a GTM engineer earn in 2026?

As of October 2026, the RevGuild GTM Engineer Salary & Market Report 2026 reports a "$150,000 median base salary (USD) across 71 disclosed US vacancies." Treat this as one source's survey of US job postings, not a full market study.

The method matters. RevGuild looked at 190 active US vacancies from June 2025 to June 2026, of which 71 disclosed pay, plus 44 profiles of people in the role. The data was collected by Glozo Talent Intelligence. The report says "All pay is annual base salary in USD as disclosed in job postings," not on-target earnings or total compensation.

Its headline figures:

MeasureBase salary (USD)
Median, all levels$150,000
Middle 50%$129,871 to $170,000
Entry level median$113,000
Mid level median$150,000
Senior median$188,000
Leader median$225,000
New York median$170,000
California median$165,000
Texas median$130,000

The report covers the US only, so it says nothing about UK or European pay. Expect lower figures outside the big US hubs, and check local job boards before you set a budget.

For a small company, the number to plan for is more than the salary. You also pay for the tools the person runs, the data credits those tools use, and the months it takes to build, test and fix workflows before they produce pipeline.

GTM engineer vs RevOps: what's the difference?

RevOps keeps the revenue process, systems and data in order. A GTM engineer builds new automated plays that use that foundation to create pipeline. The two overlap, and in many companies the first GTM engineer sits inside RevOps.

Revenue operations (RevOps) is, in TechTarget's definition, "the strategic integration of sales, marketing and service departments." Clay's guide notes that "Most companies embed their first GTM engineer inside RevOps because RevOps already owns the data foundation."

Main outputClean data, dashboards, playbooksRunning workflows that find and contact buyers

RevGuild frames the GTM engineer as RevOps with a build mandate, and says that comparison is framing rather than something it measured. In practice the line is blurry. In a small company, one person often does both.

Do small teams need a GTM engineer?

Usually not as a hire. Small teams need what a GTM engineer produces: the right accounts, researched, contacted with something relevant, with replies handled. The question is whether you build that yourself or buy it ready-made.

Hiring makes sense when:

  • you already have a CRM full of data, several tools and a RevOps function to build on
  • you run many different plays across segments, products or regions
  • you need custom logic that no off-the-shelf product handles
  • you can afford a $150,000-plus US salary, plus tools and data, and wait for results

It is harder to justify when:

  • you are a founder or a team of a few sellers without RevOps
  • you mainly need a steady flow of qualified meetings, not a custom data platform
  • nobody on the team can manage, review or maintain what the hire builds

There is a middle path. Some founders learn the tools and build workflows themselves. That works if you enjoy it, but the hours come out of selling. Agencies and freelancers can build workflows too, though someone still has to maintain them when data sources, prompts or sending rules change. If you send email, sending rules alone change often enough to need watching: see our guide to email sender requirements in 2026.

What tools do GTM engineers use?

GTM engineers combine a system of record, data sources, a workflow and enrichment engine, AI models and sending tools. Clay is the tool most associated with the role.

RevGuild's analysis of job posts found that "HubSpot leads tool demand (166 mentions); Clay ties Salesforce for second (150 each)." It also found Clay is the largest employer of people in the role, and its report notes that "Clay's own 'Complete Guide to GTM Engineering' is widely credited with popularizing the term."

The main categories:

Clay's growth shows how much money is behind this way of working. As of October 2026, The Next Web reports that "Clay has raised $115m in a Series D round" that "values the New York go-to-market software company at $7.1bn." The article says Wellington Management led the round. For how data providers get combined, see our explainer on waterfall enrichment.

Where Outbind fits

If you are a founder or a small team, Outbind gives you the output of a built GTM workflow without hiring or building one. It maps your market from your website, finds and scores people who fit (fit, persona and intent, with the reasons), researches them, and writes and sends from your own Gmail or Outlook. It also automates LinkedIn in the cloud and sorts every reply in one Unibox. Its AI, Obi, runs it on Autopilot, and pricing questions, objections and anything unclear come back to you. Plans start at $49 a month with a 7-day free trial: see pricing.

To be fair about it: larger teams with complex stacks, many segments and custom data needs may still want a GTM engineer. If that is you, our Clay vs Outbind comparison covers when each approach fits.

FAQ

Is a GTM engineer a software engineer?

Usually not. RevGuild describes the role as "closer to a technical RevOps hire than a software developer." Some coding helps, but the core skills are sales sense, data and automation.

What does GTM stand for?

GTM stands for go-to-market. It covers how a company finds, reaches and wins customers, across marketing, sales and customer success.

How much does a GTM engineer earn?

As of October 2026, RevGuild's report on US job postings puts the median base salary at $150,000, with level medians from $113,000 for entry to $225,000 for leaders. It covers base pay only and US roles only.

Who coined the term GTM engineer?

Clay says it coined the role in 2023. RevGuild's report also notes that Clay's own guide is widely credited with popularising the term.

Can a founder do GTM engineering without hiring?

Yes. You can learn the tools and build workflows yourself, hire an agency, or use an autonomous product that runs the whole process. The right choice depends on how much custom logic you need and how much of your time you can spare.
